- Create a new image set to 16 million colors OR work with an existing image.
- In the menu, click Layers >> New Raster Layer. When the next screen pops up, click 'OK'.
- Using the text tool, enter some text light grey in color:
Red: 192
Green: 192
Blue: 192
Keep the text selected at this time.

- Now click Selections >> Modify >> Feather. Enter 3 into the 'number of pixels' field, which should expand the selected area.

- Select white as your foreground color, and click Effects >> Artistic Effects >> Hot Wax Coating.

- Next, to add our color, click on Colors >> Adjust >> Red/Green/Blue.
Use the following settings for a gold coloring:
Red: 100%
Green: 50%
Blue: 0%
For a more realistic gold color, you can use this twice. Here, I only did it once.

Play around with the settings to see what other colors you can come up with as well.
- You can now deselect the text. You can now either leave the text as is, OR move on to the next step to add a more 3d effect.

- For a more 3d effect, we add a drop shadow. Click Effects >> 3D Effects >> Drop Shadow and try these settings:
Color: Black
Opacity: 40
Blur: 10
Vertical Offset: 4
Horizontal Offset: 4
Play with the settings to make the best shadow for your own image. These are the settings I use for a white background.

Not only can you use this to make gold text, you can also use it to make any color you wish.
Plus, you can also use it on digbat fonts as well.
